15 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound – Symptoms and Fetus Development

How is your baby bump? It’s growing I’m sure.  Being 15 weeks pregnant means that a third of your pregnancy has already passed. Time flies quicker than you would think. It won’t be long now until you get to hold your precious baby.

Fetus development at week 15 of pregnancy

You may be feeling that your baby is bigger. A 15 week fetus is about the size of an orange, with only 2,5 ounces (75 grams) in weight and 4 inches long (10 cm). You feel that it is bigger because of the amniotic fluid and the placenta. But don’t worry. In a short period of time, you will be a lot bigger, but at the same time, you will be beautiful. You are creating life, and that should be the single thing that truly matters.

When was the last time you have seen your baby? Most women have their scan at 12 weeks and then, until the end of their second trimester, don’t have another. I am not saying this is a bad thing, every woman does as she pleases. They have a 15 week ultrasound only if it is an emergency. I would do it only to see my baby again and again.

Week 15 come with fingernails for your baby, as well as toenails, but his or her skin is still thin as paper and really transparent. It makes you think “Ok, the baby has a very thin layer of skin, but already has nails. Why does he/she need them?” The answer is that babies don’t need them, but there is a natural order of things when the baby develops. We may not know everything there is to know, and some things are better not questioned. That is a problem for scientists. You just be happy that your baby is developing and growing into a healthy human being.

If by any chance, you go to the doctor’s for a 15 week ultrasound, you will notice that your baby is now more proportionate. The legs have grown longer than the arms and the body is longer than the head. Speaking of new developments, by the end of this week, the roof of your baby’s mouth will be completely formed.

Ever since you found out that you will have a baby, you couldn’t wait for him or she to move. Well, at this point you MAY begin to feel some fluttering movements. A fetus at 15 weeks may start to turn, twist and even kick his/her little legs. I must be honest and tell you that your baby moving is not all fun and games. Maybe while the baby is small it can be fun, but once he/she is bigger your internal organs will basically become footballs. It won’t be as comfortable, but emotionally speaking, it will satisfy you. You have that going for you, which is rather nice.

Reading about the development of a baby in the womb, I came across a piece of information that amused me. It seems that, even if the eyelids of your baby are fused shut, he or she is sensitive to light. So if you put your belly under a bright light and the baby is faced to it, he or she will turn, because apparently the light is disturbing for him/her. Your belly is sort of a Batcave and it must be dark.

Last, but not least, if you were wondering when can a fetus hear, it is about now. You can talk to him/ her, sing, read or whatever you want. You can even play some music. I don’t know if babies really like that, but what I do know is that sometimes the sound of the mother’s voice can be soothing. So go for it. It’s not like he/she has much of a choice and can go anywhere.

Pregnancy symptoms at the 15 week

There are a few new things happening to you too, as a mother. For example, to most mothers-to-be, it appears a dark line running down the baby bump. The medical term for this line is Linea Negra. If you are one of these women, don’t be concerned about it, it will fade after the baby is born.

Pregnancy at 15 weeks comes with a few adjustments concerning the activities in your life, such as the sleeping position, sitting and even the position you take while driving. You must make sure that when you fasten your seat belt it must be positioned in such a way that the lap part is right under your belly, and not over it. Otherwise, in case of an accident, the pressure will be put on your baby bump, and that cannot be good for the baby. And, when you drive, be sure to distance yourself as far away from the steering wheel or dashboard as possible. Even a fender bender can activate your airbags. Imagine the shock your baby will get if that happens. In spite of the fact that a 15 weeks pregnant belly is not that big, that doesn’t mean that your baby isn’t there and cannot feel anything that happens outside.

You can start to gather information on types of birth, even if it is still early. But as I said before, it is never too early to start planning. Also, you can find a lot of information about your baby bump week by week on this site, so take it all in and enjoy it!
